ERP X- Singapore Trials Camera-Based ERP System

Road Camera
Road Camera

Singapore is currently testing a new approach to Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) that utilizes camera technology. This experimental system, known as ERP X, is being trialled until October 2025.

The current ERP system relies on physical hardware installed in vehicles to communicate with roadside gantries. In contrast, ERP X employs AI-powered cameras that can read vehicle registration numbers. These cameras, mounted at various locations, automatically detect vehicles, and toll payments are processed through a smartphone application.

The trial is being conducted by Open Government Products (OGP), a division of the Government Technology Agency. The ERP X trial involves cameras installed in areas like Bras Basah.

This new technology has the potential to move beyond the current gantry-based system and allow for distance-based charging, where drivers are charged according to the length of their trip. As of the latest update, additional cameras have been installed, and the system has demonstrated a high accuracy rate in identifying vehicle license plates.

The trial addresses some of the challenges associated with the next-generation satellite-based ERP 2.0 system, which some drivers find the onboard Unit inconvenient. While ERP 2.0 is being rolled out, this camera-based system explores an alternative method for road pricing. you can try the ERP X by registering.
