What happens next after Grab and Uber Merge

Largest Ever Deal In South-East Asia

The news that took South-East Asia by storm is confirmed.

Grab has officially announced it has acquired Uber’s South East Asia operations, making it the largest ever deal in SE Asia.

Grab will integrate Uber’s ride-hailing and food delivery business into its existing multi-modal transportation and fintech platform to become the largest platform in South-East Asia.

Grab will acquire Uber’s operations and assets in various countries such as Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In return, Uber will receive a 27.5% stake in Grab and recently appointed Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi will join the Grab’s board of directors.

What Happens Next

Uber app will cease operation in 2 weeks time on 8 April 2018. Uber drivers will not be able to receive any jobs from Uber after Uber operations are ceased. Uber drivers account will be transferred to Grab upon notice. Existing Uber drivers who do not have a Grab driver account are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible to minimise any possible delay during this transition period. Existing Grab drivers who has an active account are not required to sign-up again.

How long for the registration to get on the road

Registration takes an average of 5 working days upon completion of training. With the large influx of drivers that will be onboarding, expect longer waiting time.

What happens to my Uber Account?

Uber will continue to be operational until 8 April 2018. All fares and incentives earned through the Uber Partner app will be honoured by Uber.

All existing request/dispute on the Uber platform will continue to be addressed by Uber. Driver can use the in-app help function to communicate with Uber support.

Uber drivers will still be able to log into their account and view their transaction history on the Uber app or through the web-based login.

Taxi-drivers on the Uber Taxi and UberFLASH platform will also not be able to receive any more jobs from the Uber platform from 8 April 2018. They have the option of joining the Grab platform just like every other Uber drivers through the sign-up link above.

The stage is set for Grab to become the undisputed leader in the region. They had announced their intentions to become the biggest player in the region back in 2017 and went on an aggressive recruitment process to onboard Comfort Delgro Taxi Drivers with never-seen-before incentives.

Grab has also ventured into bike-sharing and public transport services such as GrabShuttle Plus to cement its foothold locally.

Drivers who are crossing over need not worry too much as Grab is adopting a Better 365 initiatives to improve the driving experience for its drivers. Some of the recent changes include completion bonus incentives, driver-app features such as auto-accept and passenger rating features. Selected drivers were also able to opt-in to Grab’s Own Time Own Target Incentive Programme.
