The Straits Times reported that there are a total of 43 infected taxi and private-hire car drivers in Singapore as of the end of June 2021. In 6 cases of infections, the drivers could have infected their family members said Transport Minister S. Iswaran in Parliament on Monday 5-July-2021.
Vaccination Among taxi and private-hire drivers
According to Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, about 92 percent (48,846 of 53,268) of active private-hire car and taxi drivers have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Overall, 86 percent of the taxi and private-hire drivers population (46,054 of 53,268) have received both doses of the vaccine.
Protection against Covid-19
Taxi and Private-hire drivers are front-line workers and essential in providing transport services for our economy. Thus, full-time taxi and private-hire drivers were prioritized in receiving the vaccination. Drivers who have contracted Covid-19 during the course of providing service can seek their associations, ride-hailing companies and of course their MP for help.
Ride-hailing companies have also reminded drivers to take better precautions to protect their own health and safety. They include a mask-on policy throughout the ride, winding down the window for added ventilation and encourage riders to go cashless to minimize contact.
Singapore is likely to head towards Phase 3 (heightened alert) from 12 July 2021 if all goes well in the next few days. We must still remain vigilant and adopt best safety practices in keeping ourselves and our families safe in the course of our business.
