Currently, 1,16% of Singapore’s car population of 665,418 were entirely electric vehicles. this works out to be almost 8,000 EVs on the road.

Previously we spoke about the challenges of Taxi adopting the EV technology due to the current lack of infrastructure.

The good news is LTA is confident it can reach the 2023 goal of installing 1000 charging points in more than 700 HDB carparks despite installing only 30 EV chargers in 12 HDB parking since January. This will further increase the number of EV charges in Singapore.

The eventual goal is to have Sixty thousand electric vehicle charging stations by 2030, with forty thousand of those located in public Car Park, two thousands in private property. At least 12,000 EV chargers will be installed in approximately 2,000 HDB carparks by the end of 2025.

Five Companies were been awarded the contract by LTA to install the EV charges. In a scenario for multi storey car park, the charging station is planned to be located at the middle deck. in another words if the car park is 7 storey high, it will usually be located at level 4. If its an open air carpark, the EV chargers can only be installed at car park lots that has access to power supply.

In addition, its mandated that one charging station out of 3 EV charger has to be for motorcycle. There is no pricing difference between charging a car and a motorcycle because the cost is determined by the amount of electricity used.

In HDB car park, it will only be equipped with slow chargers. in a typical scenario on average an EV will take about 8 hours to charge and run for 400KM. Imagine you are a car owner, you will come back home be charging your EV everyday. so its highly unlikely you will need 8 hours to charge on a daily basis unless your battery is close to been flat.

In addition, to maximize the use of the Limited EV chargers for the increasing EV population. penalty might be imposed on Owner who do not shift the car after charging is done. Currently, the authority are monitor the situation and have not implemented this yet.
